ABSTRACT
The main problems faced by the two groups in Penfui Timur Village, Central Kupang Subdistrict, were the frequency of domestic chickens being raised suddenly die and lay their eggs just anywhere. This is because, the chickens were raised extensively, making it difficult to control. The results of identification with groups during a year of raising native chickens revealed that 52 birds died in group-1 and 60 in group-2. To overcome this problem, semi-intensive indigenous chicken rearing system was introduced. This empowerment activity is carried out through counseling, practice, and assistance. The two farmer groups are each assisted by 1 package of ren system cage and 3 sets of cage equipment, 2 superior cocks, 10 hens, 200 kg of maize, 100 kg of BR1 commercial feed, incubator, brooder, and 1 package of chicks house and materials ingredients for making feed. The results of this empowerment activity were (1) able to increase knowledge, skills, and motivation of farmers in raising native chickens, and (2) to increase the productivity of native chickens. The introduction of the ren system cage technology was able to increase the egg laying intensity of chickens 2 times that of the extensive system of indigenous chicken rearing. Therefore, farmer empowerment program through the introduction of the ren system cage technology, needs to be disseminated more widely to other groups.
